Mondays aren’t always our best, most productive days, are they? We wake up sad that the weekend has ended and grudgingly head back to school or work. That doesn’t mean your Monday has to be a waste, though. You have big dreams for yourself and you can’t afford to waste a whole day on not wanting to do work (especially when you spent Saturday way too hungover to do anything).

Make little goals. If you really want to get detailed here’s the system to narrow it down:

  • Imagine yourself 10 years from now. Where are you? What are you doing? What do you value most? Write it down.
  • What do you need to be doing in 5 years from now in order to be where you want to be in 10 years? Write it down.
  • What do you need to be doing in 1 year from now in order to be where you need to be 5 years? Write it down.

Now you have your 10 year plan, and that’s a huge step, but you still might want to break it down even more if your one year goal seems too large to process right now. So ask yourself this:

  • What do you need to be doing in 6 months to reach your 1 year goal?
  • What do you need to be doing this week to reach your 6 month goal?

And there you have it, your little weekly goals. I like to write mine down on a piece of paper or whiteboard every Sunday and have them on the wall somewhere I walk past a lot, so that I can’t avoid looking at them every day. They can be as small as turning in all of your assignments on time or working out three times this week. As long as you feel you are progressing to being where you need to be, that’s all that matters.

So now it’s Monday and your bus was late and you didn’t wake up in time for breakfast and you forgot about that reading you had to do and all you want to do when you get home from school is watch Pretty Little Liars until you stop thinking about the real world. How do you make any progress without just writing the day off?
