Put Yourself First

Hello lovely readers of my Motivation Monday posts, how is your Monday going? Did you have enough time to get ready in the morning? Have you eaten lunch today? Don’t forget that it’s important to get a little you time when you can and check in that you’re doing alright.

This can apply to everything from waking up half an hour earlier to eat breakfast in the morning to missing class because your period cramps are so bad you can’t move. Seriously, my best friend had to do that last week, and she never misses class. She emailed her TA, emailed her classmates, and had a mental breakdown to at least five people, convinced she was going to fail. It was ridiculous, because if she had gone she would have been absolutely miserable and unable to concentrate on anything. She couldn’t help the fact that there was no point, and still she felt awful for it.

So I’m telling you what I told her: sometimes you need to put yourself first. Before your grades, before job, before whatever it is you think is more important than your mental and physical health. Go to bed when you’re exhausted and finish that assignment in the morning. Go for a run or a swim when you’re too stressed out to concentrate. Forget about the calories and eat the damn chocolate when your anxiety levels are just too high to function properly.

Make sure you’re doing things for you, too. Make sure you enjoy your studies, you’re making decisions towards a career you want, and your health is in a place you’re happy with.

I spend way too much time thinking about what other people think, which is a fault most of us have. I just can’t help but be self-conscious about my weight and appearance, about my program supposedly not being as difficult as others, and about my hobbies and interests and desire to be a writer. I know that most people think I’m a tad ridiculous, and it makes me embarrassed to share those interest and ambitions with people sometimes.

However, I do not and will not let it hold me back. I have one life to live and I’m going to enjoy it however I see fit, even if that includes wasting my time on youtube or, more financially taxing, “wasting” my time on a degree in History.

I know that I have a lot of room for improvement, but it’s on me to determine just what needs to be improved, not on anyone else. Don’t let anyone tell you what to do, make you feel small, or take the things you enjoy away from you. Yes, Pretty Little Liars is a pretty bad show, but if you like it then who cares? Enjoy it.

Everyone seems to know exactly how the people around them should be living their lives more than they know how to live their own life. Don’t join them, and don’t let them get to you. Be you, put you first, and let others do the same. x.
